Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.  –1 Corinthians 14:12

  1. Since you are eager” Paul assumes that we are eager for spiritual gifts, which makes sense. Who doesn’t like gifts? Especially if you have a rich friend who knows you well and is good at picking out gifts. We should eagerly desire whatever God has for us.
  2. Try to excel” This command only makes sense if we have a choice about how we use these gifts. The Holy Spirit empowers us, and by empowering us, puts a focus on our choices. Unless we use our freedom well, we will not excel in using the gifts that God has given us. We can be like people who receive a wonderful gift and throw it in the attic and soon forget it is available to us.
  3. Excel in those that build up the church” Paul says that the gifts we should focus on are those which strengthen the Body. Gifts like prophecy and healing reflect the character of God because they show love to others – these gifts don’t bless the recipient nearly as much as they bless those around the recipient.

When we yearn for and excel in others-centered spiritual gifts, the whole Body benefits; and when everyone around us does likewise, we benefit abundantly. Imagine winning a lottery ticket that gives all your friends money – and then learning they got the same ticket themselves. You’d wind up getting more money than if you had won a ticket that rewarded you directly!
